Terms of service

  • Last updated

  • Applies to cabincms.com and the Cabin app

These terms are the agreement between you and Cabin for the hosted service: the app at cabincms.com, the sites it hosts for you, and the emails it sends. By creating an account or paying for a site you agree to them. A Cabin you run on your own server is covered by its open-source licence, not these terms. They are written to be read. If something is unclear, email us and we'll explain it in plainer words and fix the wording here.

The agreement

Cabin is made and run by Polite Labs. "We" and "us" means Polite Labs; "you" means the person or organisation holding the account. If you sign up on behalf of a company, you confirm you may bind it to these terms.

You have to be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and at least sixteen, to hold an account. The privacy policy, which explains what we collect and why, is part of this agreement.

Accounts and teams

You have one Cabin account and a role on each site you're invited to. Keep your password, passkey and two-factor codes to yourself; what happens under your sign-in is your responsibility until you tell us it was taken. Tell us straight away if you think it was.

Every site belongs to a team, which runs it and pays for it: your personal team, or one you make for an agency and its clients. The people who run a team can create sites in it and manage its billing without being members of each site. A site's Owner can move it to another team they run.

People you invite to a site are your responsibility. Give them the roles and content access they need and no more; Cabin enforces what you set.

Plans and billing

Every hosted site is on a paid plan; there is no free tier. The plans and prices are on the pricing page and in your team’s billing screen:

  • Small: one payment of $39 for the life of one site, with 2 GB of storage.
  • Standard: $15 a month for one site, with 25 GB of storage.
  • Agency: $49, $129 or $349 a month for up to 5, 15 or 50 sites in a team, with 25 GB each.
  • Extra storage: $5 a month for each block of 10 GB on a site.
  • AI usage: metered, at what our provider charges us plus 50%, up to a monthly cap on each plan.

Prices are in US dollars and billed monthly through Stripe, our payment provider. Your card, invoices and receipts live in Stripe's billing portal. Taxes are added where the law requires. Seats are free: inviting people to a site costs nothing.

Changes take effect at once. Adding a Standard plan to a site is charged for the rest of the month; stopping one ends it with the month already paid for, and the site goes offline when that month ends. Moving between Agency bundles is prorated. A Small purchase can be refunded within fourteen days if the site hasn't been published.

If a payment fails, Stripe tries again and we let you know. The site stays online while it does, and goes offline if the payment never arrives. Nothing is deleted when a site goes offline or over its storage limit: you keep your content and can come back to it, you just can't upload more or publish until it's sorted.

We may change prices with thirty days’ notice by email. A Small site you have already paid for is never charged again. A feature we ship on a plan stays on that plan; we never move one behind a higher paywall later.

Your content and your sites

Everything you put into Cabin stays yours: the writing, the photos, the themes you build, the form answers your visitors send. We claim no rights in it. You give us only the permission we need to host it, draw it on your site, back it up, and send it where you point your webhooks and API tokens.

You're responsible for having the right to publish what you publish, for the sites you run on Cabin, and for how you treat your visitors' data. If you collect personal data through forms or analytics, you're the one your visitors' privacy law looks to; Cabin gives you the tools, and the privacy policy says what we do on your behalf.

You can export every word and photo at any time, and your form submissions as a file. Your site's automatic address is ours; a custom domain you connect is yours, and you can point it elsewhere whenever you like.

We look at your content only to run the service, to answer your support request, or when the law or an abuse report requires it. We don't use it to train AI models.

Acceptable use

Use Cabin for sites you'd be happy to put your name to. Don't use it for anything that's illegal where you or your visitors are, that infringes someone else's rights, or that harms people. In particular, don't:

  • Publish phishing pages, malware, or anything designed to steal credentials or money.
  • Send spam, or build forms to harvest addresses for it.
  • Publish material that sexualises children, incites violence, or harasses a person.
  • Scrape, overload, probe or interfere with the service or other people’s sites.
  • Resell Cabin as if it were your own hosting without telling your clients it runs on Cabin.

We choose fast takedown over perfect prevention. Every hosted site carries a report-abuse link, sites are checked against Google Safe Browsing, and a site that breaks these rules can be taken offline at once. We'll tell you what we did and why, and listen if you think we got it wrong.

AI features

Alt text, the spam check and the assistant are optional. They run only once your team switches AI on for a site, and they're billed by use against a monthly cap you can see on the billing screen. The privacy policy says what each one sends and to whom.

The assistant drafts and proposes; it never publishes. You review what it did before it goes live, and you can undo its changes. Its output can be wrong, and you’re responsible for what you publish from it, as for anything else on your site.

Our promises and limits

We run Cabin carefully: nightly backups kept for thirty days, HTTPS on every site, updates shipped by us a few times a week, and a status page when something goes wrong. We aim to keep your site up all the time, but we don’t promise a particular uptime and we can’t promise it will never be interrupted.

Support is by email, and a person answers, usually within a working day. We're a small studio, so there is no phone line and no guaranteed response time.

The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect losses such as lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you in any twelve months is limited to what you paid us in those twelve months. Nothing here limits liability that the law says can't be limited.

If a third party claims that content on your site infringes their rights, you'll cover us for the cost of dealing with it.

Ending things

You can stop a plan or close your account whenever you like. Export your content first; once an account is closed its content goes from the app at once and from backups within thirty days, as the privacy policy describes. A team that still owns sites can't be deleted until the sites are moved or deleted.

We can suspend or end your account if you break these terms, if a payment stays unpaid, or if the law requires it. Except where we must act at once, we’ll warn you first and give you a chance to fix it and to export your content.

If we ever shut Cabin down, we’ll give you at least ninety days’ notice and keep export working until the end.

Changes and contact

If we change something in these terms that matters, we'll email you at least thirty days before it takes effect and keep the previous version available. If you don't agree with a change, you can cancel before it starts. Small wording fixes are listed at the bottom of this page.

These terms are governed by the law of the place Polite Labs is based, and disputes go to the courts there, unless the law where you live gives you something better. Questions go to legal@cabincms.com.
